A little help
to keep you on course.
From reading the compass to managing your subscription, here are answers to the questions that come up most.
Getting started
What does Windbreaker do?
Windbreaker shows wind relative to the direction you point your phone, estimates how wind can affect carry, and helps you explore course wind on a satellite map. Weather comes from Apple Weather. No account is required, and the current app has no advertising.
What is free, and what needs Pro?
The compass, Rounded adjustments, course search, satellite map, and creating/editing My Bag are free. The free timeline includes up to 24 hours ahead and 8 hours back. Pro adds Exact adjustments, saved Club input for Compass calculations, favorite courses, and up to 7 days ahead and 24 hours back. All weather windows depend on available data.
Which iPhone version do I need?
The current app supports iOS 26 or later. A usable device compass, location permission, and weather are needed for live local Compass calculations. Course search and map planning can be used without location permission.
Can I skip setup or do it again?
You can skip location, bag, and carry setup and continue free. Open Settings → App → Replay Onboarding to see the walkthrough again. Replaying keeps your existing bag. You can add or edit clubs in My Bag at any time.
Compass & distance
Which way does the gold tee point?
The gold tee points downwind: the direction the wind is blowing toward. The direction label reports where the wind comes from, as weather reports usually do. For example, wind from NE blows toward SW. Point the top of your phone toward your target to relate the wind to your shot.
What is the difference between Adjusted Carry and Adjusted Target?
Adjusted Carry: enter how far your shot normally carries in calm air; the result estimates how far it could carry in this wind.
Adjusted Target: enter the distance to your intended landing target; the result estimates the calm-air carry to plan for. Target is an approximation. It does not select a club for you.
Why are there steady, headline, and gust numbers?
The small values show separate steady-wind and gust-speed scenarios. When gust data exists, the large headline models the midpoint of those two wind speeds. It is one scenario, not a statistically expected outcome or a guaranteed safe distance. In calm wind or crosswind, rounded values may be identical.
How do Rounded, Exact, and Club inputs work?
Rounded uses the free distance wheel. Exact lets you type a precise number; the adjusted result requires Pro. Club uses a saved calm-air carry from My Bag and also requires Pro for the adjusted result. Club input fixes the output to Adjusted Carry. Tap or swipe the selector label, or use its chevrons, to change choices. Tap outside Exact entry to dismiss its keyboard.
The compass is calibrating, stuck, or reconnecting. What should I do?
Move away from carts, railings, speakers, magnetic cases, and accessories. Hold the phone normally and turn it slowly in an open area. Check that Location Services are on and Windbreaker has While Using the App permission. Return to the app and allow time for a usable reading. The screen can retain its last values during recovery; those values should not be assumed to be a new measurement.
Do the estimates account for my exact swing or course elevation?
No. The app models typical launch characteristics from your entered carry. It does not measure your swing, launch angle, spin, shot shape, course elevation, or the wind along the ball’s whole flight. A saved club contributes its carry distance, rather than a measured launch profile. Treat the results as estimates and use your judgment, especially in strong wind.
Can I use Windbreaker in a tournament?
Check with your competition committee. Weather information and calculated shot guidance can be treated differently under the Rules of Golf. Do not assume the adjusted-distance features are allowed in competition. Read R&A Rule 4.3.
Maps, weather & location
Can I use the app without location access?
Yes. Search for a course on Map and view its current wind and available timeline. Compass cannot provide live local shot adjustments without usable location and heading. Skipping location in setup can take you straight to Map. To enable location later, use the location permission control in Windbreaker Settings or iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Windbreaker.
Are the arrows separate wind measurements across the course?
No. The arrows all use the wind for the selected course or map anchor. They show direction against the satellite layout, not individual measurements at each tree, fairway, or green. Local terrain and shelter can make conditions at your ball different.
Why does Map show another course or an earlier time?
Map stays anchored to the location or course you selected while browsing. Use the location button to recenter on your position, if permission is enabled. Tap the selected date/time to return to Now. The small arrows move by hour; the arrows beside the date move by day.
Why is weather missing or not changing?
Check your connection and, for Compass, location permission. The app checks weather automatically while a weather screen is visible and on return from the background. It reuses cached readings to reduce repeat requests; current weather normally refreshes after about ten minutes and forecasts after about an hour. Apple can return older or unchanged observations. Previously loaded values can remain visible if a refresh fails. Not every course has the full forecast or history window.
Does Windbreaker work offline?
Previously loaded weather can remain in memory during the running session, but fresh weather, course search, maps, and purchase restoration depend on network access. A cold restart does not have a permanent offline weather archive. Historical weather is provider data, not a recording of the wind during your own round.
My Bag & preferences
Why do some clubs say Estimated?
During setup, Windbreaker can fill carry gaps from a few distances you enter. These are starting estimates, not measured carries or a club fitting. Your entered anchor distances are preserved. Tap a club in My Bag, enter your measured carry, and Save; editing clears the Estimated label.
How do I add, edit, or delete a club?
Open My Bag. Tap + to add a club, or tap an existing club to edit its type, nickname, and carry. Save your changes. Swipe left on a club and tap Delete, or complete a full swipe, to remove it. The bag has a 14-club limit. Use calm-air carry before roll for the most relevant input.
Can I change yards, meters, or wind-speed units?
Open Settings → Units. Distance can be shown in yards or meters; wind can be shown in mph, km/h, or knots. Distance storage uses yards internally and converts for display and entry. Small differences after conversion can come from whole-number rounding.
Does my bag sync between devices?
The app is configured to mirror clubs and favorite courses through your private iCloud storage when available. Use the same Apple Account with iCloud enabled and an internet connection. Sync can take time. Local bag storage also works without iCloud. Pro purchases are restored through the Apple Account used to buy them, separately from iCloud bag syncing.
Subscriptions & privacy
How do I restore Pro?
Use the Apple Account that made the purchase, connect to the internet, then open Windbreaker Settings → Restore Purchases. If Apple shows an active subscription but the app remains locked, reopen the app and consult Windbreaker support. Do not make a duplicate purchase to troubleshoot.
How do I cancel or request a refund?
Open Windbreaker Settings → Manage Subscription when available, or iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Windbreaker. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal or the end of a trial to avoid another charge. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Apple handles refunds. Cancellation help · Refund help.
Is there always a free trial?
No. Any trial, price, billing period, and eligibility are shown in the app before purchase. Offers depend on Apple’s eligibility rules and the configured subscription. Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. See the subscription terms.
What happens to my bag and favorites if Pro expires?
Your clubs remain editable in My Bag. Exact and saved Club Compass adjustments and other Pro features lock when access ends. Saved favorite records remain stored but are hidden without Pro and can reappear when Pro returns. Canceling does not delete the stored records.
Do I need to delete an account to remove my data?
There is no Windbreaker account. Delete clubs in My Bag and, with Pro active, remove favorite courses using their star in course search. Deleting the app removes local app data but does not necessarily remove iCloud records or backups; offloading retains local data. Apple and RevenueCat can retain subscription records. See retention and deletion for the separate controls and privacy-request process.
Does Windbreaker track me or sell my data?
The current app contains no advertising, does not request an advertising identifier, and does not save a movement trail. It processes location for local weather when you permit it, uses Apple services for maps and optional iCloud storage, and uses RevenueCat for subscription and paywall processing. The website is hosted by Vercel. See the Privacy Policy for the full explanation.
