Privacy Policy
Your game is personal. Here’s how information is used, where it is stored, and what you can control.
1. Our approach
This Privacy Policy describes how Windbreaker (“Windbreaker,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the Windbreaker iOS app, this website, and our support channels. Windbreaker is a golf wind compass and planning tool. You do not create a Windbreaker account, and the current app contains no advertising or advertising tracking.
An account-free app still processes some information. Apple services provide location, maps, weather, purchases, and optional iCloud storage. RevenueCat manages subscription access. This policy explains those flows separately from the information stored only on your device.
2. Information we process
| Information | Why it is used | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Location coordinates | Get local wind and align the compass with true north, after you grant permission. | Processed on your device; the requested location is sent to Apple WeatherKit. Apple Maps uses location when you view or search nearby places. |
| Heading and gyroscope readings | Show wind relative to your aim and keep the compass responsive. | Processed on your device. The app does not upload these readings to Windbreaker or RevenueCat. |
| Club types, nicknames, carry distances, order, and whether a carry is estimated | Save your bag and calculate wind-adjusted carry. | Stored on your device and, when available and enabled, mirrored to your private Apple iCloud database. |
| Favorite course names, addresses or subtitles, coordinates, and date saved | Return to saved courses with Pro. | Stored on your device and optionally mirrored to your private iCloud database. |
| Unit choices, distance settings, and setup progress | Remember your preferences and resume onboarding. | Stored in local app preferences; may be included in device backups managed by Apple. |
| Course searches and selected map location | Find a course and request its weather. | Search queries and relevant map area go to Apple Maps. The selected coordinates go to WeatherKit. The app keeps its search text in memory for the current session. |
| Purchase and subscription information, anonymous app user identifier, and technical SDK information | Validate purchases, restore access, manage Pro, and understand subscription/paywall performance. | Processed by Apple and RevenueCat, as explained below. |
| Support correspondence you choose to send | Respond to questions, investigate problems, and handle privacy requests. | Received by Windbreaker through its support email provider. |
| Website request information | Deliver and secure this website. | Processed by our hosting provider, Vercel. |
We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number, payment-card details, photos, contacts, microphone, or camera access to use the app. We receive contact information only if you choose to contact us. We do not operate a Windbreaker server that stores your shot history or a history of your movements.
3. Location, sensors, and weather
Windbreaker requests “While Using the App” location access after an explicit action, such as Enable Location. You may decline and use course search and map-based weather without granting location access. The live, location-based Compass calculations depend on usable location, heading, and weather data.
The app requests location updates while active and stops its location, heading, and gyroscope updates when the app leaves the active scene. It does not request background location permission or build a location trail. Silent background notifications used for iCloud sync are separate from location tracking.
Weather requests use coordinates for your current position or the course you selected. The app groups nearby requests into rounded coordinate cache regions and keeps a temporary in-memory weather cache. This reduces repeated requests; it does not make the coordinates sent to Apple anonymous. Windbreaker itself does not save this cache as a permanent weather or location record.
You can change or revoke access in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Windbreaker. The Precise Location setting is also controlled there. Reduced precision or denied access can limit local wind calculations. Device heading and motion readings remain on your device within the app’s sensor pipeline.
4. Your bag and private iCloud sync
Your club bag and saved favorite courses are stored using Apple’s on-device storage and configured to mirror to a private CloudKit database associated with your Apple Account when iCloud is available. Windbreaker does not require a separate account and does not make these records public or share them with other golfers.
Local storage remains available when you are signed out of iCloud. If the app cannot initialize its iCloud-backed store, it can fall back to a local-only store. Sync availability depends on your Apple Account, device settings, connectivity, and Apple’s services. Windbreaker does not receive your Apple Account password.
Your unit choices, Compass input and output choices, and setup progress use local preferences. Onboarding drafts are removed when setup completes. Club records created during setup remain until you change or delete them.
5. Apple purchases and RevenueCat
Windbreaker uses RevenueCat and RevenueCatUI to display Pro offers, validate and restore purchases, and keep subscription access up to date. The SDK is configured at app launch, including for people using the free version. It generates an anonymous app user identifier rather than asking you to sign in.
Apple and RevenueCat process purchase receipts or transaction data, product identifiers, subscription status, purchase and renewal dates, and entitlement information. RevenueCat’s SDK also sends technical request information such as device model, operating-system version, app and SDK versions, preferred language/locale, and storefront information. On supported iOS devices, it can include Apple’s identifier for vendor (IDFV). IDFV is distinct from an advertising identifier. Network service providers also receive the IP address associated with a request.
RevenueCatUI records paywall events such as display, dismissal, and purchase interactions, including offer/session identifiers and purchase error information. We use purchase and paywall information to provide paid features, prevent fraud, assist with purchases, and understand subscription performance. An anonymous identifier does not mean no data is processed.
The current app does not send club records, course favorites, device heading, or location coordinates to RevenueCat, does not set customer attributes containing your name or email, and does not request Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA). Apple handles billing; Windbreaker does not receive your full payment-card number. See RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy and Apple’s Privacy Policy for their practices.
6. Website and support
This website is hosted by Vercel. Standard web requests can include an IP address, browser and device information, requested URL, referring site, and request time. Vercel processes request and infrastructure information to deliver the site, maintain service reliability, and protect it from abuse. Its retention is governed by its service configuration and Privacy Notice.
We have not added advertising scripts, analytics tools, cookies, or local-storage tracking to the website. We use local image assets and system fonts, so reading a page does not require loading a third-party font or analytics library. Hosting-level operational processing still occurs.
If you email us, we receive your email address, message, and any attachments you provide. We use them to respond, investigate issues, and meet legal obligations. Please do not send passwords, payment-card details, or other unnecessary sensitive information. A screenshot can reveal a course, location, or personal club nickname; remove anything you do not want to share. This website has no support submission form. To send a support or privacy request, use the email address on our Support page.
8. Retention and deletion
- Location and sensor state: kept in memory as needed for the active experience. The app can hold the last displayed heading/weather temporarily during interruption and recovery; it does not retain a movement history.
- Weather cache and search text: kept in memory for the running session. A cold app restart needs fresh data. Apple may maintain its own caches and service records.
- Clubs and favorites: remain locally and, where syncing is active, in your private iCloud store until removed. Deleting a record in the app is intended to propagate through iCloud when sync is available. Sync and backups may take time to reflect deletion.
- Local preferences: remain until changed or the app’s local data is removed. Deleting the app generally removes its local data; offloading the app preserves it. Device backups and iCloud records can remain and can restore data later.
- Purchase records: Apple and RevenueCat retain information needed to provide subscriptions, restore purchases, prevent fraud, and comply with their legal obligations and retention practices. Deleting the app or requesting deletion does not cancel an Apple subscription or erase Apple’s transaction records.
- Support correspondence: retained only for as long as reasonably needed to resolve the request, handle related issues, or satisfy legal obligations, then deleted or anonymized. We do not promise a fixed period for records that must be retained by law.
- Website infrastructure records: managed under Vercel’s service retention practices. We have not added a separate visitor database.
To remove clubs, open My Bag and swipe left on a club to Delete. To remove a favorite while Pro is active, use the star control in course search. Turning off iCloud sync or uninstalling the app is not the same as deleting existing private iCloud records. Use Apple’s iCloud storage controls where available and contact us if you need help removing records, including favorites you cannot access after Pro expires.
For information within Windbreaker’s control, contact support@windbreakergolf.com to request access, correction, or deletion. We will explain any verification needed and any legally required retention. For a RevenueCat record, enough information to locate the anonymous subscription record may be needed; we will request only what is necessary through the support channel. Private iCloud content is controlled through your Apple Account; we cannot promise to erase Apple-managed backups or Apple purchase records.
9. Your choices and rights
You can decline or revoke location permission, edit or delete your clubs, manage available favorite records, change units, and use Apple’s settings to control iCloud and subscriptions. Canceling a subscription, deleting app data, and revoking location permission are separate actions.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent, and complain to your local data-protection authority. These rights are subject to applicable exceptions. Contact support@windbreakergolf.com to exercise rights concerning information in our control. We do not discriminate against you for making a privacy request.
Where European Economic Area, UK, or similar data-protection laws apply, our purposes and legal bases are providing requested functionality or support, your consent where required for optional access, legitimate interests in secure operation and fraud prevention, and legal obligations for required records. Withdrawing consent affects future consent-based processing and can limit the feature that uses it.
Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. When applicable law requires protection for an international transfer, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as contractual commitments and recognized transfer mechanisms. Provider notices explain their processing locations and safeguards.
10. Children
Windbreaker is a general-audience golf utility, not a service directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through our support channels. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it where appropriate. A parent or guardian should supervise a minor’s use of paid features and Apple Account permissions.
11. Changes and contact
We will update this policy if Windbreaker’s functionality or information practices change and update the date above. Material changes will receive additional notice where required. A future addition of advertising or another data service would require updated disclosures before use.
